John Freeman Young papers, 1863-1876.

ArchivalResource

John Freeman Young papers, 1863-1876.

The letters, chiefly to Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, begin with Young's departure for Europe to visit Constantinople and Russia and his request for introductory documents to the Greek and Russian Orthodox Churches, 1863. Subsequent papers chiefly concern the work of the Russo-Greek Committee of the House of Bishops, 1866-1874, and deal with relations with the Eastern Churches, the Committee's report, and General Convention actions regarding it. Mention is made of Orthodox Church dignitaries, such as Bishop Leonidas of Moscow, and the dispatch of a letter from the bishops of the Episcopal Church to the Orthodox Churches, and miscellaneous materials, such as circulars about St. Mary's Priory, Fernandina, Fla.
